Using Markdown and Lightweight DITA in a Collaborative Environment

by Leigh W. White and Keith Schengili-Roberts, both DITA Specialists at IXIASOFT

Date: Monday, April 24

Time: 10:50am - 11:30am

Do developers, engineers, or other SMEs contribute content to your team? Do they use DITA? Cheerfully? How about your writers using DITA? Are they comfortable? Do they feel DITA offers many more options than they need? Do you wish there were an integrated way to provide a simpler DITA authoring environment—one that could easily be expanded to a full DITA environment when appropriate? If you’re nodding your head, then you’re in luck.

Lightweight DITA (LwDITA) offers both a simplified tagset and an interchange mechanism between DITA and Markdown. This presentation offers one example of a workflow implemented in the IXIASOFT DITA CMS that takes advantage of both DITA CMS features and oXygen XML functionality to show how teams can use LwDITA and Markdown to improve the authoring and content contribution experience.

The presentation also illustrates useful aspects of the workflow not dependent on the IXIASOFT DITA CMS.

What can the audience expect to learn?

Entry-level usability, particularly for casual contributors and authors new to DITA, is an ongoing concern for the DITA community. Both Markdown and LwDITA have great potential to enable a straightforward authoring experience.

This presentation shows that it is absolutely possible to create an end-to-end process whereby new or infrequent DITA users can author fully valid DITA content with minimal exposure to tags or structure.

Passport to your future DITA/CCMS implementation

by Sharon Figueira, IXIASOFT Presales Technical Consultant

Date: Tuesday, April 25
Time: 8:30 - 9:10am

Moving to a DITA/CCMS authoring environment is a massive paradigm shift, and planning content restructure and reuse in this unfamiliar world can be challenging. It is a bit like preparing to move to another country – a visit can show you so much more than any number of books or movies! Join me for a guided tour, and get a taste of how to analyse your content and prepare it for the big move.

What can the audience expect to learn?

Using real-life case studies, learn about analysing content to prepare it for migration. Analysis includes mapping your current content to DITA, identifying opportunities for reuse, tools for maximizing reuse even when content must diverge, and the best point in the project to implement the different strategies.

Reaching out to your SMEs and reviewers

by David Kerfoot, IXIASOFT Business Development Manager

Date: Tuesday, April 25
Time: 2:20pm - 3pm

You rely on reviewers, because good documentation needs quality review. Do you make it hard for your SMEs by asking them to learn a doc tool, download PDFs, or hunt for new text? Do you ask them to review the same content over and over because you can’t track change at the level you need? When you find bugs in your content, can you trace back to the review?

If you want to make it easy on your SMEs, and improve your visibility into the review phase, come and see IXIASOFT’s new light authoring tool. ***SMEs can track changes, add comments, and write content, just as they do in their favorite word processing app. Fine-tune SME access to source content, ranging from basic commenting through to full co- authoring of your sophisticated DITA content. Use the CCMS workflow to assign reviewers, track review on a topic-by-topic basis, and mark as complete so you never ask your SME to review the same content twice.

Ask the Experts

Date: Wednesday, April 26
Time: 1:30pm - 4:30pm

Join IXIASOFT's Keith Schengili-Roberts on the final afternoon of the Content Management Strategies/DITA North America conference at the "Ask the Experts!" session. This is a chance for attendees to bring their questions and the challenges they are facing to seek advice from the experts in a casual setting.

Keith has over 25 years of experience in the technical writing field as a writer and a manager, and over a dozen years of experience with DITA. As IXIASOFT's market researcher and Chair of DITA OASIS Committee, he also has in-depth knowledge of who is using DITA and why, and can talk to ongoing trends he sees in the technical writing industry.

If you want to know more about the IXIASOFT DITA CMS or have a question on anything else DITA-related, Keith will be there to answer your questions!
