Change or insert attributes

Elements have attributes that you can edit.

If an attribute is grayed out, it is not available for editing. For example, system attributes – such as class – cannot be edited. Others, such as the conditional attributes (audience, platform, and product), may also be set through their own dialog, which is available from the right-click menu in the XMetaL Editor.

Note: Once you have placed your cursor in an element, you can view or set attributes for any of its direct ancestors up to the topic level by selecting one from the drop-down list at the top of the Attribute Inspector.
  1. Open the topic in your XMetaL editor.
  2. Place the cursor in the element whose attributes you want to change.
  3. Open the Attribute Inspector.
The Attribute Inspector view appears, showing a list of valid attributes for the selected element and their current values.
  4. Type or select the required Value.
You can set values for more than one attribute.
  5. Press Enter or click anywhere inside the XMetaL editor.
The attribute is applied to the element.
  6. Optional: Select another element in the current element's hierarchy from the drop-down list at the top of the Attribute Inspector, and modify the attributes as required.
