About image resolutions and formats

You can maintain images in different resolutions and formats for use with different types of output.

Different output formats frequently require different image formats for optimal display characteristics. You might, for example, want to use a low resolution interlaced JPEG with output that’s designed for the web and have a high-resolution version for PDFs.

When you import multi-resolution images into the system, they are assigned a collective ID and stored in a zip file with the extension .image. Then, when output is generated, the transformation template inserts the appropriate image format wherever the image ID appears in your XML text.

The following diagram shows the different formats that can be set for an image:

The format names that you see will vary according to how your system is configured. When you import multiple formats for an image, they are displayed in the Images pane as shown below:

A line with no image details (no Mime Type, Width, Height) means that there is no image in the repository for that format. A line with image details means that an image with that format exists in the repository. The details of an image can be displayed in the following colors:
  • Green: The image was created and has not been released (shown above).
  • Blue: The image was edited and has not been released.
  • Grey: The image was released to the repository.

The default image format is displayed in bold. The default format is the one that is displayed if the Output Generator cannot find the format specified in the transformation template. This is also the image that displays in the Preview view.
