Add existing objects in Structure view

You can add existing objects to a map in Structure view. This lets you reuse topics created in other maps, or you can add another map as a submap.

You must have the map checked out in Map Editor and be in Structure view. The toggle must also be set to Edit.

To add objects:

  1. Find an element in the map that you want to add the existing object after.
  2. In the Map Edit column, click Plus icon for that object, and select Insert Objects.
  3. Select one of the following:
    • To add an object at the same level, select Same Level.
    • To add an object one level below, select Sub Level.

Same Level: Objects at this level are for organizing things that have parallel structure, like separate chapters in a book, or topics talking about related subjects.

Sub Level: Objects at this level are for adding information that is under a higher-level subject, such as adding related articles under a high-level introduction topic in a chapter.

Note: If one option is greyed out, then no objects or elements can be added at that level.
    The Insert Objects dialog appears.
  4. Search for the object that you want.

You can click on the titles to see a preview of them.

  5. Click the checkboxes for the objects that you want to insert.

You can select as many objects as you want. A counter beside Insert tracks the number of objects selected.

  6. Click Insert.
Tip: You can also click Insert while previewing an object. This inserts the object you are previewing and any others you selected in the Insert Objects dialog.
    The New Element dialog appears.
  7. From the Element drop-down list, select the element that you want to add.
The Element drop-down list shows only elements that you can insert at the current location.
Note: If you picked different types of objects, they are all added using this element.
  8. Click Insert.

The object(s) are added at the same level or a sub level.
